What about Organic Maps ?

Organic Maps has a strong constraint that makes their technical implementation differ a lot from ours : they want to keep being offline maps, even for transit calculations.

We don't believe it is a worthy constraint to be an alternative to Google Maps, quite the opposite : the general public is quite OK with Google and Apple Maps being online. As far as I know, Google Maps used to not work outside of network coverage for like 15 years ? It already reached 1 billion user without the download area feature.

Of course, offline maps are a good thing for some people and some specific use cases (e.g. hiking), and we're often using them.

We'd like to someday include download capabilites to our Web app, storing some maps on demand (like Apple and Google's mobile apps) in the now huge in 2025 browser memory.

We'd also like to direct users to OrganicMaps for mobile bike and car navigations, as we're not planning this in the medium term at least... but https://github.com/stadiamaps/ferrostar might save us :)

We've dropped a friendly message on Organic's discussion forum https://github.com/orgs/organicmaps/discussions/9041
